Special consideration

Special consideration is when UTS College uses academic judgement to determine whether illness or accident have affected your performance in an assessment.

Also, if you’re unable to attend a final exam due to illness, accident, or religious commitment you may be eligible for a special exam.

You can apply for special consideration in these cases:

  • Serious illness or injury, when you have a medical certificate stating that you weren’t able to attend classes
  • Bereavement of close family members (such as parents or grandparents)
  • Major political upheaval or natural disaster in your home country requiring emergency travel that interrupts your studies
  • A traumatic experience (such as being involved in, or witnessing a serious accident; witnessing or being the victim of a serious crime)
  • Any other circumstance that requires evidence to be considered as compassionate or compelling.

What evidence do you need to submit?

Your Special Consideration Application needs to be supported by documentary evidence at the time of submission. This may include:

  • Original supporting documentation
  • A Medical Certificate
  • A Completed Professional Authority Form
  • Appropriate documentary evidence for non-medical circumstances.

The professional authority form must be completed and signed by:

  • A registered medical practitioner
  • A registered psychologist or registered counsellor
  • A minister of religion (if religious commitments have affected your ability to do assessments)
  • Your employer (if you’re in active services).

Attach documentation, such as a medical report, death notice or certificate, police report or statutory declaration to this form. Clearly state the severity and period of illness in the professional authority section. If you have documentation in language other than English, please also include an English version translated by a certified NAATI translator. We can’t accept backdated medical certificates, receipts for medical fees, or medical certificates from non-registered practitioners.

The Student Success Adviser will keep your documentation in a confidential file.

Who will consider your request and how will an outcome be communicated?

The Student Support Manager will assess your submission. If it’s approved, they’ll then inform the Academic Coordinator who will apply the special consideration provisions to your results in the relevant subject. They’ll notify you by email of any extension or alternative assessment deadlines. Such deadlines can’t extend beyond the end of the second week of the special exams, except in exceptional circumstances.

Please lodge all requests for special consideration no later than five working days after the due date of the assessment.
