Our Peer Mentor Program

Our Peer Mentor Program
The Peer Mentor Program has proven highly successful in aiding new students to transition smoothly into student life.

At UTS College, we have 12 Peer Mentors working across all academic programs, including dedicated mentors for under-18 students. The program involves weekly face-to-face meetings, pairing experienced students with newcomers or those seeking guidance, and is divided into ‘Under-18’ (weeks 1-10) and ‘Over-18’ (weeks 4-10) students.

The guiding principles of the program

Trust – understanding the challenges and experiences faced by new students, and creating a safe environment.

Academic support – providing academic assistance, sharing tips on study techniques, time management and subject-specific help.

Emotional support – helping mentees navigate the social aspects of university and boosting confidence through various activities.

Cultural diversity – providing valuable insights to help with cultural awareness and understanding.

Positive peer influence – serving as positive role models, influencing mentees to adopt healthy habits, attitudes, and behaviours.

The program ends with a celebration and ceremony in Week 12 after the completion of exams, where all participating mentors and mentees come together to celebrate their journey and accomplishments together.

Hear from a mentor

Kyara Shanthal Tarazona Aradiel (pictured), Diploma of Engineering, is one student who has shared her experience of becoming a peer mentor.

"As a student at UTS College, I got the chance to develop different skills in a handful of areas: academic, social, professional. Having the opportunity to work closely with my peers and professors allowed me to get to know more about the student experience and to connect with others.

"I was honoured to be part of the Peer Mentoring Program in which I listened, guided, and motivated my mentees by sharing my experiences with them. As an under-18 myself, I would always seek support when needed and help when I could, which is a message I always tell others.

"I enjoy my time in this role very much as I get to be a leader, guidance and a good friend."
