New Academic English curriculum

New Academic English curriculum

We are pleased to announce our new Academic English Curriculum is now available.

The curriculum ensures UTS College is uniquely positioned to provide education excellence and deliver world-leading education outcomes for our students.

Taking a research-based approach to design, it leverages and incorporates:

  • leading research and language learning theories
  • best practice governance and compliance principles
  • academic integrity and APA7 referencing
  • alignment to the UTS 2027 strategy
  • 21st century and technology skills
  • integration with HELP
  • leading assessment approaches.

This curriculum sets up our students for success at UTS.

Academic English Fast Facts:

  • The new curriculum has five levels: Academic English 1 (AEL1) to Academic English 5 (AEL5) – 200 hours per level, catering for students at different levels of university readiness.
  • The learning outcomes are explicit: students know what they are learning and will demonstrate this in each lesson and throughout the course.
  • The program leverages Canvas: students' education is in one place, at their fingertips, on any suitable device.
  • A focus on formative assessments (rather than a 'teach to the test' model): with the additional power of teacher and HELPS support, formative assessments allow for timely feedback and demonstration of learning opportunities throughout the course.

Finally, our students on completion of the AE5 course have said: “This course is making me work hard, but I’m learning so much!”, “I never knew I could achieve this” and “I feel confident now”.
