(2-minute read)
It all began on 2 November 1988. That’s the day the ‘Morris Worm’ was released from a computer in Massachusetts, infecting thousands of computers. Since then, advances in technology have presented hackers with ever new ways to cause mayhem in computer systems.
According to the latest report from Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) Australia experiences a cybercrime every seven minutes on average (an increase of 13 percent from the previous year). Why are attacks on the rise?
The dark side of the digital age
While a world buzzing with technology is full of exciting opportunities, it also offers sophisticated tools to hackers. They’re geared up to exploit vulnerabilities in computer systems, networks, and individuals. From ransomware attacks to the phishing scams that pop up in junk mail, no sector is untouched. The consequences are stolen identities, compromised privacy, and disrupted businesses.
Enter the ‘white hats’
Cybersecurity professionals are a new breed of heroes on the digital battleground. They implement robust measures to secure our devices, networks, and data. By analysing complex codes, investigating breaches, and developing sophisticated algorithms, they can detect, prevent, and mitigate attacks.
The cybersecurity industry is expected to continue growing by 12 percent between now and 2027. Few industries are growing as fast. For people with the right skills and knowledge, that spells opportunities. Career options include security analyst, security architect, IT security engineer, cyber security officer, incident responder, security system developer, information security auditor and network administrator.
How to get started
If you’re ready to fight cybercrime, a Diploma of IT from UTS College, your pathway to the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), is also your pathway to a career in cybersecurity.
On successful completion of your diploma, you can now enter second year at UTS in:
- Bachelor of Cybersecurity
- Bachelor of Criminology/Bachelor of Cybersecurity (combined degree).
And if you’re looking for a career in AI you can also now fast-track to second-year Bachelor of Artificial Intelligence at UTS.
In most cases, the Diploma of Information Technology at UTS College leads straight to second year* of a corresponding degree at UTS. In addition to the three new articulations, the diploma also leads to:
