An outstanding performance at the e-Icon competition from our talented students in Indonesia
An outstanding performance at the e-Icon competition from our talented students in Indonesia

When the Korean Ministry of Education were looking for Indonesia’s best and brightest to compete in the e-Icon World Contest, they chose four outstanding students from our regional partner, UIC. The e-Icon World Contest is a prestigious international competition that brings students together from around the globe to develop innovative educational mobile apps. Held from 4-9 August, the contest is an opportunity for young developers to showcase their skills, share ideas, and build cross-cultural understanding.

Competing students are invited to develop projects that focus of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This year’s theme was ‘An Educational Mobile App to achieve Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8) and Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11).’

Allysia Heidy Kurniawan, William Naryanto, Owen Widjaja, and Evan Wenas – all Diploma of Business Students at UIC Indonesia – travelled to South Korea to compete in the finals. In competition with the most talented students from Thailand, the Philippines, Bangladesh, and Moldova, their projects were assessed for creativity, technical proficiency, and potential impact.

We’re proud to share that the UIC team more than rose to the challenge. They scored an impressive third place, winning a prize that includes free mentoring, full funding to compete in Korea (including airfares and accommodation), and the opportunity for their developed apps to be showcased at the Edtech Korea Fair in October.

The prize winners created a travel app and a job-seeker app, addressing the UN themes of 'Sustainable Cities and Communities' and 'Decent Work and Economic Growth'.

Allysia and William developed an ‘e-talk’ travel application, addressing the ‘Sustainable Cities and Communities’ theme. Their hope is that it can be used to help grow Indonesia’s tourism sector. Evan and Owen won for their ‘Skillsprint’ app, which relates to the ‘Decent Work and Economic Growth’ theme. It aims to connect job seekers and employers, also offering trainings to improve the skills of job seekers.

Peter Harris, Executive Director, Future Students at UTS College, congratulated the team from UIC College Indonesia, saying, “We’re delighted to see this group of high-performing students showing the world what they can do. We look forward to welcoming them to Sydney to complete their degrees.”

UTS College CEO, Morwenna Shahani, also congratulated Allysia, William, Owen, and Evan. “We’re so proud of your achievement. Like UTS and UTS College, our UIC partners value these important UN goals. It takes courage to compete on the world stage, and you’ve already proven yourselves to be a formidable team. You’re a living example of the UTS spirit of innovation and impact. We’re excited to see what you do next,” she said.
