What is the Duke of Edinburgh Award, and why is it important?

A prestigious award that builds real life skills.
A prestigious award that builds real life skills.

The Cambridge International AS and A Levels is about more than academic excellence. In addition to the highly regarded Cambridge A-Level curriculum, and the option to explore university (diploma) level subjects, students enjoy outstanding opportunities for personal development.

First among these is the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh Award program (Duke of Ed). Completing the Duke of Ed is an impressive addition to any CV. It’s an accomplishment that’s widely recognised by universities and employers. The Award is offered in over 130 countries, and includes bronze, silver, and gold levels (each progressively more challenging). Each level consists of four core sections:

  • Physical Recreation (having fun, getting active, and improving overall health and wellbeing)
  • Skills (develop an existing talent or explore a new skill or interest)
  • Voluntary Service (making a difference in the community)
  • Adventurous Journey (developing confidence and self-reliance by conquering a challenge)

An accomplishment that employers admire
Students who successfully complete the Duke of Ed – and hundreds of thousands of young people all over the world take part – describe it as life-changing. The Award demonstrates a high level of determination and commitment. It’s admired by employers because the individuals who participate build skills that are important in the real world (it also shows that they are ambitious and ready to push themselves). Perhaps more importantly, it’s an opportunity to make a difference to other people’s lives, to the community, to be fitter and healthier, to make new friends, and build lifelong memories.

Duke of Ed activities in the Cambridge International AS and A Levels are scheduled for the weekends and do not interfere with any scheduled classes. The dedicated Student Experience Coordinator at UTS College will arrange and organise activities within the Duke of Ed framework to support students’ progress in the Award program. Participating in the program enhances students’ academic achievements, while building skills in communication, teamwork, problem solving, and composure under pressure. Students build character traits like confidence and resilience, which can boost mental health and wellbeing and help them overcome personal challenges.

Balancing studies with activities, sports, and fun
A healthy, balanced approach to life and study is one of the keys to future success. That’s why all students in the Cambridge International AS and A Levels also have complimentary membership of ActivateUTS, which is home to more than 180 student clubs and societies, and a wide range of sporting activities. ActivateUTS also hosts regular age-appropriate events throughout the year.

It’s free for students to join as many clubs or events as they like, and it’s a perfect way to meet new friends and settle into campus life. Events include live music, social sport, day trips, games, movie nights, and much more. There’s always something new, and the Student Activities team welcome suggestions from students too.
