“Stay calm and see a Study Success Adviser” is the advice given by Kaipin Wu, Study Success Adviser of UTS Insearch’s Peer Mentoring program and Study Skills Workshop. When asked about the main challenges facing international students adapting to student life, Kaipin identified three main challenges. They include cultural differences, language barriers and different learning techniques.
Kaipin acknowledges that academic success is reliant on a variety of factors and strives to provide personalised student services that address the individual needs of each and every student. The Academic Wellbeing Sessions held during Orientation and Academic Preparation week are designed to educate students about the support services available. These sessions include information and an overview of the Study Skills workshop and the International Student Mentoring Program.
Study Skills Workshop
Held after Orientation and Academic Preparation week from week 2 to week 10, are designed to help students get a head start with their studies. Students will learn about time management, how to develop personalized learning strategies, basic study skills, group work and presentation skills. Students will learn how to get the most out of their lectures and tutorials, and how to use Canvas, the education-leading online tutorial system.
International Student Mentoring Program
Students will learn more about the International Student Mentoring Program (ISMP) during Orientation week. The ISMP is an initiative which began at UTS Insearch in Semester 1, 2018. This program aims to improve international students’ experiences and engagement at UTS Insearch. Brand-new international students, in groups, meet regularly with a senior student (mentor) who has already successfully completed a UTS Insearch program. In addition to providing study advice and assistance, peer mentors also support their students in settling into life in Sydney, understanding Australian culture and making new friends.
