Quantum Computing at UTS

Quantum Computing at UTS

Students with a Diploma of IT from UTS Insearch, who articulate into the Bachelor of Computer Science at UTS, can now choose a new major in Quantum Information Science.

International career opportunities

Quantum computing is one of the most transformative technologies of the 21st Century. There are growing international career opportunities for graduates in quantum information technologies, analysis intensive industries, technology start-ups, and deep-tech research and development roles in leading technology companies or academia.

The new major in Quantum Information Science in the Bachelor of Computer Science at UTS is the only course of its kind in Australia. It incorporates computer science, mathematics, and physics. Students examine ideas at the heart of computer science and quantum mechanics, and study cutting edge topics in quantum computing (such as quantum algorithms, quantum computer architectures, and quantum programming).

This unique major will appeal to students who are creative thinkers, comfortable with advanced mathematics and ready for theory-heavy computer science.

A leading destination for quantum computing

UTS is the top-ranking university for computer science in NSW. It’s also among the top 100 worldwide for graduate employability. The Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at UTS has a strong reputation for practical learning programs and industry engagement. The UTS Centre for Quantum Software Information (QSI), an elite research institute located on campus, enriches the student experience.

Other pathways

Other students in the Bachelor of Computer Science program (such as those in the AI major) also explore quantum computing, however it is not a core subject in those majors.

UTS also encourages cross-disciplinary learning between the Science and Computing faculties, and students of Applied Physics also investigate quantum mechanics, computing and technology.

UTS Insearch, the pathway to UTS

The UTS Insearch Diploma of Information Technology leads directly to second year of a corresponding Bachelor degree. While learning the same content as first-year students at UTS, diploma students build their study skills and develop the confidence to succeed at university and beyond.
