What is Welcome Week?

Academic programs 

Welcome Week is the first week of your first academic semester at UTS College. It’s an exciting time when you’ll find out everything you need to know at the start of your program to set yourself up for success. 

Attendance at Welcome Week is mandatory, but it’s also a lot of fun.

Welcome Week structure

  • A program welcome session to start things off. It includes an introduction to UTS College from your Program Manager.
  • Program workshop sessions, where you’ll explore the aims and objectives of your course. These are a chance to learn exactly what’s expected from you, and what you can expect from your program. You’ll participate in:
    • Program-related presentations by your program managers, academic coordinators and teachers.
    • Introductions to the aims and objectives of all your subjects. If you’re doing any subjects that require a diagnostic test, this will happen during Welcome Week.
    • Social meetings to form learning groups within your subjects. These are a chance to get to know your classmates and teachers through team-building exercises and practical activities.
    • Study success sessions - UTS College academic staff will help you best prepare for your studies and sessions include information about:
      • Developing your learning skills while studying at UTS College, including our Learning.Connected approach to teaching and learning.
      • Preparing for your classes, the types of assessments you’ll complete, and the support available to you.

 

During Welcome Week you’ll find out about the many support services at UTS College. These include the learning support program, peer support, Student Success Advisers, special needs, special consideration, wellbeing, UTS counselling and health services. 

Preparing for Welcome Week

You can expect an email with information about your Welcome Week. It will tell you when and where you need to arrive. It’s important to understand that Welcome Week information may change, so please keep checking your UTS email account and the important dates page for the most up-to-date information.

Your Welcome Week schedule can be downloaded directly via your Canvas Module, as found in Step 5 below.

Every student must bring with them to O-Week:

  1. Windows laptop or Apple Macbook (NOT an iPad, Android tablet, or Chromebook) with the English version of Windows 10 or macOS Big Sur (11.0).

    • Note: Your laptop must have its operating system, Office 365 Suite and Google Chrome set to English.

  2. Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) Letter.
  3. Passport (International students only)
  4. Water bottle.

You must complete this step to access your learning platform, student email account, and start classes.

  1. Go to https://www.uts.edu.au/email
    • Click "Account Activation"​
  2. Enter your:
    • Student number
    • Given name (first name)
    • Family name (last name)
    • Date of birth (dd/mm/yy)
    • Click "Continue"
  3. Read the UTS IT Facilities policies
  4. Select 3 secret questions and enter the answers
    • Click "Set Securty Questions" to continue
  5. Enter your chosen password into both boxes
    • Click "Set Password" to finish

CaptureME is used by all new students to submit a photo for their first UTS College Student Card. You can upload your photo using a computer, tablet or smart phone. See the guidelines for uploading your photo. 

You'll receive an email advising if your photo has been 'approved' or 'rejected'. After your photo has been approved, the Student Centre will notify when your ID card is ready for collection at the Student Centre (Building 5, Block C, Level 1).

Remember, the earlier you complete this, the earlier your Student ID will arrive. 

Login to UTS College Canvas using your UTS email address and password.
  • Your student email is StudentID@student.uts.edu.au
    • E.g. 14249302@student.uts.edu.au
Your Welcome Week "Welcome" module will give you all the information you need throughout your O-Week, as well as a brief guide into life at UTS College.
This course will appear on your Canvas Dashboard, 2 weeks prior to your Welcome Week.

Once you have completed you UTS College Orientation Module, you are ready to attend Welcome Week! 

You can prepare yourself more by accessing your Student Handbook, which outlines your program and has all additional information you need to succeed at UTS College. 

What to do if you miss Welcome Week

Remember, Welcome Week is the start of your program. It’s mandatory and a key part of your success, so you’re expected to attend.

If you’re an international student and experience a delay, for example a delay with your visa, you can arrive up until the end of the first week of classes. This is only allowed if visas are delayed or for some other serious reason.

If your arrival is delayed, contact the Student Centre to enrol and get ready for classes as soon as you arrive. If you don’t complete your arrangements, your enrolment could be cancelled. If you’re an international student, this will impact your visa.
