When you arrive at UTS College, you’ll complete a short English language test during Welcome and Orientation. This helps us place you in the class that best matches your current skills.
Even if you’ve already completed a recognised English test (such as IELTS, TOEFL or PTE), we complete our own assessment to confirm your current level. This ensures you start in the class that will give you the best chance of success.
Yes. Academic English Level 4 and 5 students complete the test during orientation.
This is where UTS College helps. As an education pathway, UTS College helps prepare you for university study and build all the skills you need to succeed at UTS and beyond.
You’ll learn how to think and work independently, how to collaborate in groups, build your communication skills, improve your time management, and much more.
You’ll discover outside of high school in the ‘real world’ what you’re good at, what drives you, and what sort of career and study options interest you.
UTS College is also the pathway to UTS and the only pathway that guarantees* entry to UTS. We make sure you’re supported, set up and ready to take on the challenges of study at the uni of your dreams.
- On your first day of Welcome and Orientation, you’ll complete online listening and reading tasks
- Some students may be invited to complete a second test the following day
- After this, your level will be confirmed or adjusted
Most students remain in their original level.
In some cases, your level may be adjusted after testing to better match your current English skills. This helps ensure you’re learning at the right pace and getting the most from your course.
If your level changes, it can affect the duration of your English course and the timing of your next program.
If this applies to you, our team will clearly explain what this means and support you with any updates to your study plan.
No preparation is required.
The test is designed to assess your current English level. If you would like to practice, you can:
- Read in English
- Watch videos or films in English
- Listen to English podcasts or music
Please bring:
- A laptop or device
- Charger
- Headphones (recommended)
Make sure your device is fully charged for the test.
- You’ll be contacted on the same day if further testing is needed
- Final placement is confirmed during orientation
- By the start of classes, you’ll be in the correct level
