Global Perspectives

FGP001

This subject provides students with a thorough understanding of globalisation through diverse conceptual approaches. The subject engages with processes of globalisation such as colonisation, trade, migration and technology and examines the issues and challenges facing the world from a range of cultural, economic, social, environmental and political viewpoints. Globalisation is a complex phenomenon that involves the expansion and stretching of social, cultural, economic and political activities across traditional boundaries, frontiers and physical distances. The result of this growing connectedness and interdependence increased the integration of the world, where life at the local level is directly impacted and shaped by events occurring far away, and vice versa. A pluralistic approach is employed to examine globalisation by analysing past and present processes taking place in multiple domains (e.g. economic, political, cultural, social and environmental). As a dynamic process, globalisation can be understood by considering its effects on individuals, communities and nations.
