Life in Sydney and around campus

Before arriving in Sydney

Before arriving in Sydney

Check the information listed below. Youll also join an online pre-departure session where we'll give you guidelines on what to prepare ahead of arriving in Sydney. We'll send you information on this at a later date.

Your digital starter kit

You’ll use several UTS College resources and systems to manage your studies. Some of these are:

New student hub
This helps you navigate your summer term and get set up for your studies.

eStudent
For timetables, results and keeping personal details up-to-date.

Canvas
Your online classroom where you’ll find subject materials, assessments and announcements.

Email
Your official UTS student email account. Check it often so you don’t miss anything important.

Textbooks
You will need to purchase textbooks ahead of starting your studies. Check your Cambridge International textbook list here.

You can set up systems and access resources below. Support will be available at Welcome Week if you prefer to get help in person.

Welcome Week (orientation) and your first steps

Your first week is all about finding your feet and feeling supported. During orientation you will:

  • meet staff, teachers, peer mentors, student ambassadors and support staff
  • learn how our systems work
  • tour the campus
  • receive your timetable

You’ll also pick up your student welcome pack and meet other students in your program.

Subjects and assessments

The Cambridge International program has a clear structure to help you build knowledge step by step. You’ll learn through:

  • class activities and tutorials
  • independent study
  • practical tasks
  • coursework and exams

Your teachers will explain how each subject works, what to expect in assessments and how to prepare for success. Here is your Cambridge International textbook list. Resources sit within your learning platform, Canvas.

One of the unique advantages of studying Cambridge International at UTS is you will also participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award, which is integrated into your timetable.

World ready with the Duke of Ed

Doing the "Duke of Ed"

All Cambridge International students at UTS College take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award - which is known locally here as the "Duke of Ed". It gives you the chance to build confidence, try new activities and explore Sydney while developing skills that support your studies. You will complete parts of the Award during your regular timetable. There are also optional sessions before and after classes, including sport, community projects and skill-building workshops.

Through the Award you will work on four areas: physical recreation, service, skills and an adventurous journey. Each one helps you grow as a learner and prepares you for university life.

The Award is recognised around the world and gives you a stronger sense of independence, teamwork and resilience as you begin your Cambridge International journey. It's an inspiring program for young people and we can't wait to see what you achieve!

Support and wellbeing

No one succeeds alone. Reaching out for support is a smart way to stay on track and make the most of your time at UTS College. Support, inspired by Lizzio’s Five Senses of Success research, is built into everything we do. That includes Learning.Connected, our model of learning, which is designed to help you feel capable, involved and ready to learn from day one.

Here’s how UTS College support fits into your study journey:

Your community

You’ll be welcomed by our student ambassadors and peer mentors. They’re current students who can answer your questions, show you around campus and share tips for study and life in Sydney. If you're under 18, you will be automatically matched with a peer mentor where you'll meet with them regularly.

As two of our students - Michael and Polly - explain in this video, peer mentors can help you settle in to your studies and quickly feel part of our close community. Once classes start, you can also join clubs and make the most of campus activities. These are just a few of the many programs you can join as part of our UTS College community.

It's given me more confidence to talk and express myself...it's a closer community with more friends...and the smaller classrooms make it easier to connect with each other."
