A guide to Sydney to get you started

All work and no play make life boring, so remeber to take a break and go on an adventure. We’ll show you how to see Sydney the right way. Living in Australia’s largest metropolitan city means there are countless ways to spend your weekends eating, playing and exploring.

Here’s a quick list of some of the best places Sydney has to offer. And don’t worry, these great places are friendly for tight student budgets. The best part of all – each of these sites is within convenient walking or public transport distance from the UTS College campus, so get out there and explore your new home.

First things first…

Indulge in some quintessential Australiana by visiting Sydney’s most iconic sites. Head to Circular Quay overlooking Sydney Harbour. You can enjoy views of the world-famous Sydney Harbour Bridge on one side and the Sydney Opera House on the other. To get the full Aussie cultural experience, spend Australia Day (January 26) having a picnic or barbeque at the Harbour, or watch the fireworks off the Bridge on New Year’s Eve (December 31).

If you appreciate a good meal…

Head to Sydney’s renown Chinatown district (which is right next to UTS College) to enjoy hundreds of authentic Chinese and other Asian cuisine restaurants. Make a pit stop for dessert after at Messina, one of Sydney’s most popular gelato spots. Got a free Saturday morning? Browse fresh produce and boutique cafes at Carriageworks Farmers Markets – the busiest Saturday market in Sydney.

If you have an Instagram addiction…

Check out the beauty of the city while upping your follower count at the same time. Located at Sydney’s most famous beach, see the crystal-clear waters of the Bondi Icebergs Pool, the most Instagrammed place in Australia. Head to the Harbour-side Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) to get your modern art fix, or go shopping for some new clothes at Westfield Sydney, the Queen Victoria Building, or the historic (and Instagram-worthy) Strand Arcade.

If you like getting back to nature…

Enjoy the great outdoors year-round thanks to Sydney’s comfortable climate. The Bondi Beach to Coogee Beach coastal walk connects Sydney’s most picturesque beachside views on a cool six-kilometre stretch of coastline. From Circular Quay, catch a ferry to Manly Beach to enjoy the scenic coast. And if beaches aren’t your thing, enjoy a long walk discovering native plant species at the Royal Botanic Gardens – one of the oldest public gardens in the Southern Hemisphere.
