5 reasons why you should study Engineering

I’m Emily and I’m an international student from Myanmar. I’m currently studying a Diploma of Engineering at UTS College and here are my top reasons why you should choose to study engineering.

Practical classes

If you’re like me and don’t love sitting in a classroom staring at books, engineering might be for you! In engineering, you’ll learn through a mix of practical and theoretical study methods such as labs, calculations, drawings, report writings, and so on. You can always change to a different mode of study when you get tired of one. For instance, if you have been writing a report for hours and you feel stuck, you can just refresh your brain by simply doing calculations and solving problems.

High income

It’s no secret that engineers are paid well. It might be true that engineering is a hard degree to study but the hard work does pay off! There are a high number of job opportunities for graduates in Australia and globally. In Australia alone, engineering job vacancies were up 176 per cent since June 2020 (ABC).

Save the environment

If doctors could save human lives, we, engineers are able to save the environment. If you’re passionate about healing the environment or developing infrastructure to make it a better place, this profession suits you. You can create structures and systems that are environmentally friendly whilst still making a business out of it, if that’s a career goal for you. Sustainability is the way forward and you could be part of making a positive impact on the planet!

Various options

When you say Engineering, there are a lot of options that you can choose from. I mean a lot! From biomedical engineering and chemical engineering to nuclear engineering and aerospace engineering, you can specialise in what you are really interested in. And if you’re not quite sure of what you want to do, you can take the Diploma of Engineering at UTS College which gives you a general overview allowing you to decide on your major a year later.

Skills

Personally, this is the part I love most about studying engineering. You learn how to solve problems which is an essential life and work skill. Not only that, you’ll learn critical and logical thinking skills, teamwork, communication skills, decision-making skills, and so on. Even if you decide that you want a career change later in life, the skills you learn in engineering are transferable and adaptable to other careers.
