Top 5 tips when moving to Sydney 

Moving to Sydney is an exciting time but there’s a lot to think about. Henry moved from China to study Academic English at UTS College and is now studying Biomedical Engineering at UTS. Here are his top 5 tips when moving to Sydney. 

Aud Cash

Remember to exchange some AUD cash from the bank when you are in China or have access to a bank card that can be used in Australia. Ideally $500 - $1000 should be enough depending on your expenses to get you through the first two weeks. This is because international transfers often take several business days and it can take 1-2 weeks for you to get your bank card from an Australian bank. Therefore, having this organised before you arrive will save you time and stress.

Find accommodation before you come 

Finding accommodation before you arrive can help you settle into Sydney easily and quickly. It's not just about having a place to stay when you arrive, you will be asked to fill in your intended residential address in Australia on your Australian Incoming Passenger Card. There is plenty of student accommodation around UTS College that might be suitable for you. Always ensure it’s a reputable company and preferably ask your education agent, a friend or family member in Sydney (if you have one) to look at the property for you.  

Travel adaptor 

Don’t forget to bring a multifunctional travel adaptor so you can use your electronics from your home country. Although, you can buy travel adaptors here in Australia, this will save you the hassle and time of finding one.  

Clothing 

The year-round temperature in Sydney can vary from cool winters to very hot especially in summer. So pack mainly cool and comfortable summer clothes, like t-shirts, and a few winter clothes. A warm jacket for winter is handy. Of course, don’t forget a hat, sun protection should always be kept in mind when living in Sydney. 

Important documents 

Print some important documents and bring them with you when you come to Sydney, including the offer from the university, Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) and VISA Granted Letter. The purpose of bringing it with you is to make it easier to provide if there is a customs check. Of course, you will certainly need to do some business such as banking in the first few days in Sydney, and it will save you a lot of time if you can bring a printed copy.
