Meet Megan, Current UTS Science student. Future Crime Scene Investigator
When Megan didn’t receive the ATAR she was hoping for, she took some time out. She had taken mainly art and design related subjects for her HSC and felt burnt out. The competitive world of design no longer appealed. After a few months’ break, and a lot of thought, she felt drawn to a more science-based career.
“I’d heard from my cousins that there are pathway courses into uni,” she said, “and I found out about UTS College. I’ve always wanted to go to UTS.” Megan applied for the semester three intake and began studying for a Diploma of Science. She says, “I was nervous because I didn’t take any science at school except biology, so picking a science diploma was a huge challenge. But the teachers were all so willing to help. I remember I had trouble with Chemistry 1 in the first semester, but the teacher would take time out of his day and sit down and explain until I understood.” Megan’s proudest moment was when she got her results back for Physics and Chemistry and saw she had done well. “I started to believe I really could pursue a science career and actually do well at university level.”

Now in the first year of her Bachelor of Forensic Science (majoring in crime scene investigation) at UTS, Megan’s dream job is to be a crime scene investigator with the police force. “It’s kind of a passion,” she says. “I love reading about crime and watching investigations in films.”
Megan considers finding that passion a more important key to success than any exam result. “Your ATAR doesn’t define who you are. There are pathways like UTS College to help get you into the degree you really want to pursue. So, don’t give up hope - fight for what you want to do.”
