High school students in South Korea are being encouraged to help the world through design as part of an innovative competition launched by multi-award-winning designer Casey Hyun and Australian education pathway UTS Insearch.

Students born between 2000-2003 in South Korea are invited to submit an original design or artwork, along with a brief description in English on the topic of “Design your Future – help the future of the world through design”.

“We know that young people are passionate about the future world and their place in it,” said UTS Insearch Partner Manager, Ms Helen Hwang.

“It is exciting to anticipate how students will bring their imagination and creativity to life and share with us their inspiration and expectations for the future through design.”

Leading designer, strategist and trend-forecaster, Casey Hyun, who at only 36 years of age was appointed Head of Strategic Design at Hyundai - a role he held for for eight years - will judge the competition. He grew up in Seoul before migrating to Australia with his family and studying industrial design at UTS and is keen to encourage young designers to explore the world around them and create its future.

“Design inspiration can come from everywhere and everything we do in our lives. Design is any kind of action that betters people’s lives. When design can improve and change the way people think and what they do, then it has done its job well,” said Mr Hyun.

Competition entries will be judged on creativity, originality, relevance to the topic, quality, written description and connection to Australia. Entries are open between 1 July-11 August 2019 and should be submitted online.

Finalists will be invited to attend a special design workshop with Mr Hyun in Seoul in August, with KRW 3.7M available in prizes for winners, along with scholarship options.
